What to look for

  1. Plan for low energy, not your best day. Stock for the night you have nothing left.
  2. Buy what keeps. Frozen, dried and canned food gives you more time to use it.
  3. Small amounts of fresh food. Buy only what you'll eat this week.
  4. Repeat meals. The same few breakfasts and dinners mean fewer decisions.
  5. A cooker that keeps food warm. Rice that holds warm covers you if you wander off. Once it's off the cooker, refrigerate it within 2 hours.

No-energy nights

1 pick

Keep a few backups in the freezer for nights with nothing left: breaded chicken that cooks from frozen, a bag of frozen vegetables and a bag of frozen fruit. Frozen food keeps for months, so it isn't wasted if this week gets away from you.

Bell & Evans

Bell & Evans Breaded Chicken Tenders

Jack uses this

Frozen breaded chicken breast tenders you cook straight from the freezer. They're sold raw, so cook them through: Bell & Evans says about 15 minutes in an air fryer, until a meat thermometer reads 170°F. They come in regular, gluten-free and organic versions.

Who it's for

Anyone who needs a protein dinner on a night with no energy to cook.

Why it can help

  • They cook from frozen, so there's nothing to thaw or plan ahead.
  • ADDitude readers keep frozen nuggets, frozen meals and other freezer backups for low-energy nights. Source

Who it's not for

If you avoid gluten, get the gluten-free version: the regular tenders are breaded with wheat flour.

“I really like these on nights I don't have the energy to cook.”

$7.49 to $13.99checked Nov 2026

From a 12 oz bag to the 30 oz value pack, Whole Foods Market prices on Amazon when checked. The 30 oz pack was on sale from $14.99. Bell & Evans doesn't sell direct, and store prices vary.

Some energy

3 picks

Rice with chicken thighs or beans is cheap and forgiving. A rice cooker makes the rice without you watching the pot, and dry rice and dried beans keep for a year or more.

Aroma Housewares

Aroma Digital Rice Cooker, 8-Cup (ARC-914SBD)

A cheap digital rice cooker that makes up to 8 cups of cooked rice. It switches to keep-warm when the rice is done, has a delay timer, and comes with a steam tray for vegetables.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants rice without watching a pot, for about $40.

Why it can help

  • Reviewed names it an Editors' Choice for useful features at a low price. Source
  • It switches to keep-warm when the rice is done, so wandering off doesn't burn dinner.

Who it's not for

Reviewed found its rice inconsistent, and America's Test Kitchen got gummy results with a big batch of long-grain rice. If you eat rice most days, the Zojirushi is more consistent.

Zojirushi

Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker (NS-ZCC10)

A step-up rice cooker that makes up to 5.5 cups of uncooked rice and adjusts its cooking as it goes. It has keep-warm, extended keep-warm and a delay timer.

Who it's for

People who eat rice most days and want it right every time.

Why it can help

  • Reviewed picks it as the best rice cooker overall. Source
  • America's Test Kitchen's winner is this 5.5-cup Neuro Fuzzy. Source

Who it's not for

At about $280 it's a lot for rice. If you make rice once a week, the Aroma does the job.

$279.99 to $304.99checked Nov 2026

$279.99 for the 5.5-cup model. The 10-cup NS-ZCC18 is $304.99.

Instant Pot Brands

Instant Pot Duo Plus, 6-Quart

A 6-quart pressure cooker that also slow-cooks, steams, sautés and cooks rice, so one pot covers beans, chili and chicken.

Who it's for

People who want beans, chili or chicken thighs with less time at the stove.

Why it can help

  • Reviewed picks it as the best pressure cooker for most people. Source
  • One ADDitude reader's low-effort staple is frozen chicken, frozen peppers, taco seasoning and canned tomatoes in an Instant Pot, over rice. Source

Who it's not for

It's bulky, about 13 inches each way, and you have to let the pressure out before the lid opens. If rice is all you want, a rice cooker is simpler.

$139.99checked Nov 2026

Instant Pot's site sends buyers to stores. $139.99 is the regular price at Amazon, Walmart and Kohl's; Kohl's had it on sale for $89.99 when checked.

Breakfast on autopilot

1 pick

A go-to quick breakfast takes one decision off the morning. Jack's is Greek yogurt with blueberries or blackberries and granola.

Fage

Fage Total 2% Greek Yogurt (plain)

Jack uses this

Plain, thick Greek yogurt with 2% milkfat. Add berries and granola, and breakfast takes a minute with no cooking.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants a quick breakfast with protein and no cooking.

Why it can help

  • No cooking and nothing to decide, so breakfast still happens on a slow morning.
  • CHADD's breakfast tips suggest keeping yogurt and cut-up fruit on hand for simple, grab-and-go meals. Source

Who it's not for

If you don't eat dairy, skip it. Buy the size you'll finish before it goes off.

Buy less that spoils

Food that goes bad before you get to it is part of the ADHD tax. These storage times come from the USDA's FoodKeeper and FoodSafety.gov.

  • Berries

Blueberries keep 1 to 2 weeks in the fridge and blackberries 3 to 6 days, but raspberries only 2 to 3 days. Frozen berries keep 8 to 12 months.

    Source: USDA FoodKeeper

  • Rice and dried beans

Uncooked white rice keeps about 2 years in the pantry, and dried beans 1 to 2 years.

    Source: USDA FoodKeeper

  • Raw chicken

Raw chicken pieces keep only 1 to 2 days in the fridge, but 9 months in the freezer. Freeze what you won't cook in the next day or two.

Source: FoodSafety.gov: Cold food storage chart

  • Leftovers

Cooked chicken keeps 3 to 4 days in the fridge, and frozen chicken nuggets or patties 1 to 3 months in the freezer. Cook what you'll eat in a few days, and freeze the rest.

Dietary Guidelines and a dietitian

  • Protein at every meal

The 2025 to 2030 Dietary Guidelines say every meal should include protein, from animal or plant foods, with vegetables and fruit every day.

  • Convenience food when you're busy

CHADD's podcast on healthy eating and meal planning with ADHD asks if you turn to convenience foods when you're busy. Its guest, registered dietitian Kim Arrey, shares practical strategies for meal planning and preparation.

  • Not medical advice

Food is not a substitute for ADHD care. For questions about eating and ADHD medication, like appetite, ask your prescriber or a registered dietitian.

What we left out, and why

  • Supplements and special diets

Those are medical questions, so they belong with your prescriber or a registered dietitian, not on this page.

  • Meal-kit subscriptions

They deliver fresh food on a schedule, which can go bad in the fridge when your energy drops. This page leans on food that keeps.

How we pick

  • No affiliate links and no sponsored picks. Links go to each maker's own site.
  • Prices are ranges checked in October 2026, and November 2026 for trackers, smart home and food. They change, so check the maker's page or the store named in the price note.
  • We only say Jack uses something when he does. Everything else fits a need people with ADHD often describe. Each pick links to its sources, and some are about the idea rather than that exact product.
  • Nothing here is medical advice.
